Visiting Scholar's Program

The Program: Moscow State University’s Faculty of History invites applications from scholars, graduate students and undergraduates wishing to spend a sabbatical semester or year abroad conducting academic research in the history of Russia, the Soviet Union, and the Soviet successor states. All visiting scholars and students will have the unique opportunity to participate in the rich intellectual life of the Faculty of History’s community, partaking in its activities. Privileges include invitations to all of the Faculty’s seminars, events and related activities such as workshops on a broad variety of topics in history during their term of affiliation.

Purpose: To facilitate and supplement the independent research of scholars and students on leave from their parent universities or research institutions where that research is related to the Faculty of History’s current research programs.

Subjects: Russian history to the beginning of the 19^th century; 19^th and early 20^th century Russian history; 20^th century Russian and Soviet history; the history of social movements and political parties; source studies of Russian history; ancient history; medieval history; history of Byzantium; modern and contemporary history of European and American countries; history of Baltic Slavs; archaeology; ethnology; history or Russian art; general art history; ancient languages; foreign languages; historical information science.

The Faculty of History provides the following services:

• Visa support with registration;
• Admission to archives* and libraries;
• Access to a wide range of lectures and special seminars in the Faculty of History;
• Russian language classes;
• Accommodations in one of MSU’s dormitories costing approximately $75 a month. The faculty can assist in arranging accommodations to meet the needs of those requiring special housing.

Fees: The Faculty of History’s Visiting Scholars program currently assesses a charge of $2000 per semester.
