The study of foreign languages is considered to be an indispensable component of professional training for specialists in History. Students in the Faculty of History may select to study foreign languages as a second academic specialization. Graduates who have choosen to specialize in one or more foreign languages are then qualified as "Historian - Teacher of History with Command of a Foreign Language".
English, German, French, Spanish, Italian and Greek are taught in the department.

The main field of research within the department is the Methodology of Foreign Language Teaching.
